a little bit of elegant gilding and a lot of cottage charm.
Those are some of my inspirations for the petite cottage bathroom makeover
that we have been working away on for the past week.

It was basic with just the essentials & there was water damage from a leak
which resulted in damage to the walls and floor in one area.
which resulted in damage to the walls and floor in one area.
The before shows the replaced sheetrock area and work starting on the ceiling -
We pretty much looked at this project as starting from scratch with the damage that had already been repaired.
It was more than ready to get a new look and be made over into a beautiful space!
(Apologies for the dark photo)
Lowes gave each of their Creative Ideas bloggers $500 to head to Lowes
& find the elements to do a bathroom makeover
I love all of the design and decorating projects that I always find at Lowes while the Mr. shops
for lumber so I knew I would find the perfect elements to make the bathroom amazing.
for lumber so I knew I would find the perfect elements to make the bathroom amazing.
It was supposed to be a quick trip in to grab supplies but truth be told...
I wandered and dreamed and drooled for several hours.
I even used their free in store wi-fi with my ipad to search a couple products online as well.
All I was missing was a cup of coffee and a little lunch in the garden department.

On my makeover want list:
Everything I found was already priced fantastically and even better- on sale!
I also found a couple amazing clearance deals
As a big time bargain shopper
I LOVE that!

New Lighting, different ceiling & wall coverings, flooring, trim and a new sink and faucet

I knew exactly what type of sconce I wanted for the space.
Something with a vintage feel and lots of charm AND since I had a lot of things
I was planning on doing in the bathroom they had to be priced well too.
I found these beautiful sconces and fell in love.
Shabby, french cottage and so sweet and just $49 each-
Shabby, french cottage and so sweet and just $49 each-
yep, they are perfect.
(I already had the chandelier)
We had great bones with the angled ceiling - but it was just plain old sheetrock originally.
We found thin grooved knotty pine planks from Lowes to finish the ceiling with
These pieces come in packs of single pieces that you groove together and then finish as you like
I painted them with Valspar right off the shelf white paint watered down a bit.
Love the character they add to the room with their knot holes and rough texture
and they are priced at $8.99 for 14 square feet.
Awesome.
Next was a drop-in bathroom sink.

I thought about a pedestal sink-and Lowes had some gorgeous ones for sure
(already thinking about replacing the sinks in my master bathroom with a pair I found)
but I had the perfect shabby old sideboard stored just waiting for a new life as a vanity.

but I had the perfect shabby old sideboard stored just waiting for a new life as a vanity.
It was A LOT of work to clean it up as it had several issues but it is so charming for the space.
I love the chrome and white faucet- another sale priced find at just $37.
(I'll share the how to on turning this sideboard into a vanity in another post.)
Being a big time bead board girl -of course that was on my list.
Being a big time bead board girl -of course that was on my list.
I wasn't sure if I would go with bead board wallpaper or bead board panels.
I found both of them at Lowes- but when I saw the panels,
I absolutely loved how detailed their wall board was.
I absolutely loved how detailed their wall board was.
It has a different rounded type groove instead of the more flat ones
and it really makes a difference in how it looks on the wall in person.
Being that this is a pretty small room- we didn't need too many sheets-
they were priced around $18.00 each.

These shelves are made with crown moulding pieces that are actually foam trim boards
I love them because they are fantastic for moist areas like a bathroom and their architectural detail.
They are placed high up on the wall- at 8' to cover the seam where the bead board panels
came together in this 10' tall room.
Some of this trim was leftover from a previous project so we didn't need much more.
I am a big believer in re-using what you can, finding elements that you already have
and re-imagining them and also in mixing old and new.
The old bathroom door is original to our house - just a new coat of paint was all it needed.

The transom type window was a flea market find from a couple years ago~
perfect other than it has one pane of glass that needs to be replaced
(oops...)
The floor was replaced with a creamy sand colored tile that was a Lowes Special Purchase
and just .78 cents each so the whole new floor was around $45
The work was all done by my husband and I
After we worked on the beadboard & the Mr got the bulk of the heavy lifting done-
I came in and finished up the trim & finish work, built the shelves and wrapped it up.
I am so impressed by the design and room elements I found and used for this makeover at Lowes
and how incredibly far $500 went! Working with some of what I already had and mixing vintage finds in-
we were able to makeover the bathroom on a budget.

I hope not...
because I'm kinda loving it.

ReplyDeleteWow - what a gorgeous transformation - I like the way you have incorporated the new products into your vintage finds - that sideboard is gorgeous, and I agree with you - while pedestal sinks look pretty, I don't think they are at all practical!

Just beautiful, Courtney. Hard to believe those sconces could be new, it's all amazing!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I'm swooning right now. No, make that drooling right now! You used my favorite color combo grey, white and touches of fushia and pink topped off with burlap. Those are the colors I used in my powder room, but it doesn't hold a candle to yours! I love the beadboard walls and wood planked ceiling. I love the romantic style mirror and sconces above the grey antique looking vanity with the rolled up towels in it. Love the little chair with burlap and all the ruffled white fabric. Ok, I better stop now before I write a book. Just yummy!!
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOSH! YOUR BATHROOM IS GORGEOUS....
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with loving THAT bathroom! I LUV it too!
ReplyDeleteYou blow me away! I love how you have used new and old to create and instill a vintage European feel. This reminds me of my grandma's farmhouse bathroom...which is a compliment! The airiness, the basicness, yet beautifully detailed combination is perfect and I think Lowe's should be honored that you have showcased such elegance with their products:)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely darling! I love, love, love the vanity! and the sconces! You are fantastic!
ReplyDeleteHope mine turns out even half as great as yours....
Nancy

ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful! No wonder you love it. Now I'm thinking how boring our little powder room is!

ReplyDeleteCourtney, this is so pretty and romantic and so you! I would love to have a dresser to place a sink in, but no room for one in our little bathroom. The master has to stay the way it is, but your dresser in that gray and filled with towels is so yummy. I love the sconces. They are perfect. I didn't know you had a separate cottage on your property. What fun to decorate.
ReplyDeleteWow, so pretty and I am so happy that the items are available so reasonably from Lowes. I love that you mixed vintage items with new for such a great look. I'm going to check our Lowes here in Canada for new taps, and possibly lighting for our master bath.
ReplyDeleteThis bathroom makeover looks as though it is coming straight out of a magazine article...Everything is so impeccably done..stunning...I am in awe of your DIY skills...Perfect piece for the vanity...amazing job!!

ReplyDeleteI feel as if I've just been transported to France. You've done a beautiful job with this little makeover...! So amazingly creative and thrifty too. Great Job and Great Inspiration!
ReplyDeleteso pretty Courtney! I smiled when I saw your light fixtures. We just looked at those for our bath! :) they are so cute! we are in a pickle with our lighting. They've been broken for over a year, look terrible, and now we've been through 4 different fixtures, and none fit the existing fittings. :( So frustrating! If we can't find one that fits, we will be turning a not so expensive DIY to a drywall and electrician job. On a five year old house. Boo!
ReplyDelete(I'm sure you wanted to hear all that, didn't you?!) Your bath looks great!
Wow! It is Stunning!! I love every detail of it! The ceiling, vanity, the fixtures! it's beautiful!
